Marlin Park Playground Has Re-Opened!

It’s finally time again to play in the park! Redwood Shores’ Marlin Park has been under construction for a few weeks, but at last it is finished and ready to be opened to the public.

The all-new Marlin Park playground had its grand re-opening on Saturday August 4th, where residents were able to celebrate the renovation of Redwood Shores’ central park and be amongst the first to enjoy the new playground and facilities.

Marlin Park’s playground is now open for play, so come on out and see what’s new to do.

Marlin Park Playground Renovation Project Update

We’re getting very close to initiating the Marlin Park Playground Renovation Project. The contractor has been selected and we are working on a timeline, finalizing orders and delivery dates for equipment, and gearing up.

Up-to-date information on the project’s development and contracting is stored on the Redwood City website at www.redwoodcity.org/marlinpark . Door hangers notifying residents who live within 400 feet of the park will be placed by the contractor within the next two weeks.

Marlin Park Playground Renovation Plans are Underway!

A newly renovated playground area for school age and tots is coming shortly to Marlin Park in Redwood Shores. Two community meetings were held in Redwood Shores (one at the Sandpiper Community Center on January 8th and the other at Marlin Park on April 9th) to gather input into what residents and users would like in the renovation of the existing playground at Marlin Park. Staff, and the Landscape Architect on the project (Abey Arnold Landscape Architects), received excellent comments, suggestions, and onsite requests to help us put together the final concept plan that is shown.

We’re excited that in addition to refurbishing the large playground structure with new slides and climbable equipment, we will be adding an “Aero-Net” for more climbing fun, two saddle spinners, a shade canopy (over section of the play structure), new trees, and more seating areas. And, we will be creating a new, separate tot only play area that will be fenced in for safety; a request we heard loud and clear throughout the input process. In this new area, we will place a playhouse slide, a “daisy bouncer”, a dune buggy bouncer, safari play panel, and toddler swing.

Through our community input process, residents, by consensus, decided to spend the majority of the renovation budget on main playground area rather than the beach area. We will remove all of the old equipment to form an open viewing area of the beautiful lagoon.

Right now, we are finalizing the construction plans and hope to award the project by early July. Once a contractor and a construction schedule is determined, the renovation project could begin near the end of August. A similar sized project typically has an approximately 120-day construction period (with additional days added due to any weather or other unforeseen issues).

City Update from Councilperson Gee

Every couple of years, the City conducts a satisfaction survey of our residents. In November 2010, over 400 residents were surveyed on the phone, and asked a number of questions related to our Quality of Life in Redwood City. This is not just a one time, survey — by repeating the survey on a regular basis, we are able to track and review results.

What the 2010 Satisfaction survey revealed is that over 90% of our residents feel very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with the overall quality of life in Redwood City. These results were particularly high in Redwood Shores. Other notable categories that received high marks from Redwood Shores residents included our satisfaction with city services, and public safety.

And how can we not be satisfied here in Redwood Shores? We have a great library that was supported by our community, a new school, books for both the new school library and the library, levees that are now certifiable, restored bay wetlands at no direct tax payer expense, and a community that enjoys the opportunities to be outside! The weedwhacker makes its annual visit to the lagoons, and last year, for the first time, parts of the lagoon were dredged. For those that continue to say “Redwood City does not pay attention to the Shores” — Not True! Building on the foundation that Councilmember Foust laid when she was first elected, I can assure you that Redwood Shores is part of Redwood City.

As life happens in its own way, things do happen that we need to address. Last year we had the sewer line break at Lighthouse Cove. Several homes suffered damaged and several gallons of sewage spilled into the lagoon. Our city staff responded wonderfully, and many cities on the Peninsula offered their help. Marilyn Harang, the Interim Director of Public Works Services led our response Team, and Evan Boyd, our new Director of Public Works Services arrived in time for all of the post-event paperwork.

Evan and his staff are working hard to make sure that street lights and signals are working properly out here n the Shores. During repairs, they have discovered crushed conduits, broken fixtures, and in some cases, missing copper wiring — probably removed by those seeking its recycling value. I can assure you that functioning traffic signals and street lights are receiving attention from Evan and his staff.

Another area of the Shores that is also receiving attention is Marlin Park. Chris Beth, our Director of Parks, Recreation and Community Services and his Team are working with our residents on plans for the renovation of Marlin Park. They are looking for your ideas about what you want our “new” Marlin Park to be.

Justin Ezell, Superintendent, is working with an additional 15 HOA’s that want to use recycled water for landscape irrigation. As the President of my HOA, I can attest that the financial savings of recycled water are definitely positive. We are not using recycled water where children can come into regular contact with it, and our landscape has not suffered.

The challenge ahead for all of us is “what do we need to do to maintain the Quality of Life we enjoy in Redwood Shores”. In partnership with our staff, department heads, executive Team and labor groups, we are working hard towards achieving financial sustainability for our City. But what about our greatest asset in the Shores — our lagoons? The GID fund is basically gone, and we will have on-going maintenance and repair needs for our lagoons (e.g., dredging) and for maintenance of the levees. How do we fund these improvements and others?

There are a number of choices that need to be made on these issues and others. Whatever choices are made, all of us need to be informed. I ask that you stay engaged and involved, and let me know what’s on your mind.

Redwood City Welcomes Juventus Northern California Spring Soccer Showcase

Redwood City is proud to be the primary host city for the Juventus Sport Club’s Northern California Spring Soccer Showcase, a huge annual soccer tournament that brings not only a fun sporting event, but also a great deal of economic activity to our community.

Presented by Juventus Sport Club (the oldest soccer club on the peninsula), the 4th Annual Northern California Spring Showcase will take place March 4 – 6, 2011 in Redwood City (as well as in some nearby mid-Peninsula cities, and in the East Bay). As the number one rated soccer tournament in all of Northern California, this event will bring nearly 8,000 people to Redwood City and the peninsula.

The entire community is invited to come out and welcome the Juventus Northern California Spring Soccer Showcase. This tournament will offer fun, exciting soccer games played at the highest level. Perfect for the whole family, whether die-hard soccer fans or new to the sport – this will be a remarkable and thrilling tournament!

For Redwood City, this is a momentous event that brings significant economic activity to the community’s businesses. Converging on our area will be 235 soccer teams (94 teams from outside the area, plus three Canadian teams and one National Champion team), close to 8,000 people including players and parents, with approximately 375 games played. Over the course of the weekend, Redwood City’s rough, un-scientific estimates show that local spending by those 8,000 people could total nearly $1 million (including food, hotels, incidentals, and other spending). In addition, over 50 college coaches from across the nation will be here looking for hot prospects for their own soccer programs. And, Redwood City is very proud that three home town players, who were recently selected for the US national programs, will play with their Juventus Teams during the tournament.

Juventus Sport Club is a competitive youth soccer club in Redwood City with a mission of developing skillful, confident, and responsible youth soccer players who will be successful on and off the field. Founded in 1956 by four Italian immigrants, Juventus is one of the oldest soccer clubs in northern California. It is a volunteer-run, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.
