Redwood City’s General Plan is Award-Winning!

Redwood City is proud to announce that its new General Plan, completed and approved in late 2010, has been named as the “Winner of the 2012 Comprehensive Planning Award – Small Jurisdiction.”

This great honor comes from the American Planning Association’s Northern California Chapter, recognizing Redwood City’s “outstanding achievement in the planning field” and paying tribute to the City’s innovative plans, projects, and achievements.

The General Plan is the blueprint for what Redwood City will be – it reflects the community’s values and guiding principles of today and creates a vision for the future of Redwood City. This plan was several years in the making, a process that included countless hours of staff time, dozens of community workshops and input sessions, and numerous meetings of the Planning Commission and the City Council. The result is a remarkable document that will guide the City’s physical development over the next 20 years, and which now stands as a shining example to other cities of similar size, as to what a top-quality General Plan should be.

This award is not only well-deserved recognition for the City staff, Planning Commission, and Council, but also for the entire community. It incorporates hundreds of ideas and comments from the people of Redwood City, who patiently followed the process, became engaged through innovative and unique community involvement activities, and helped to make this a living document, with flexibility to adapt to future unknowns and opportunities, and which stands as the foundation for the continuing work of building a great community together.

Community GIS Update on City Website

I know that many of you have already visited Redwood City’s Community GIS (Geographic Information System) page, located at http://www.redwoodcity.org/gis . Even if you’ve already enjoyed using this application, we’ve added yet more new features that I think you’ll want to check out!

First, the newly-adopted 2010 General Plan has been added as a layer. This layer can be found on the left side of the GIS screen in the “Land Use” folder. And, a parcel’s 2010 General Plan designation (instead of the old 1990 designation) will be displayed when you select a parcel.

Second, you can now view details on Park and Facility projects (just like you can for City Infrastructure Projects, and Planning Projects) – take a look under City Projects on the main menu of GIS, on the right side of your screen. With this feature, you can see where Park and Facility work is going on and get details such as type of work, status/update, City engineer/planner and contact information, and more. When you are driving, walking, or biking around town and see something going on, you can look for it on Community GIS and get all the info.

And last but not least, an interactive GIS layer has been added depicting Redwood City’s recently implemented “Path of History” walking tour! Besides displaying the route, each historic site is highlighted with a picture and a brief description. Check it out by clicking on “Path of History” on the main menu of the GIS on the right side of your screen.

Take a look at Redwood City’s Community GIS – http://www.redwoodcity.org/gis – it’s a great online resource to help keep the Redwood City community informed.

GIS is a computer-based mapping tool that takes information from a database about a location – such as streets, water features, parks, census data, parcel information, and more – and turns it into visual layers on a map, while also providing detailed data about that location. Redwood City uses GIS in planning, redevelopment, community outreach, demographic analysis, economic development, and other areas.

City Council Certifies Environmental Impact Report, Approves New General Plan

At its meeting of October 11th, 2010, the City Council of Redwood City gave final approval to the City’s new General Plan, and also certified the Plan’s Environmental Impact Report (EIR). This is a remarkable milestone for Redwood City as it implements this years-in-the-making Plan which establishes the key goals, policies, and programs for the long-term physical development of the community.

Over the last several years, Redwood City has gathered a great deal of community input, comment, and opinion on the New General Plan through a series of public workshops, Planning Commission sessions, and City Council meetings. The result is a General Plan which is a highly evolved and flexible blueprint for the community, written to reflect that significant community input received, as well as Planning Commission and City Council direction.

The General Plan creates a framework for maintaining the qualities that distinguish Redwood City, while establishing a solid foundation for anticipating and responding to changing conditions over the next twenty-plus years.

“Redwood City’s new General Plan is an investment in the City’s future” said Peter Ingram, City Manager. “It enables thoughtful, sustainable change in our community, as a living document containing flexible, adjustable tools. It’s a foundation for future discussions, deliberations, and decisions involving the future of our community.”

Throughout the extensive community input process, Redwood City received hundreds of ideas and comments. Often referred to as a “blueprint for the future,” the General Plan is a document that establishes policies, goals, and programs for the long-term physical development of the community — how the City will look, how development will occur, and what the community wants the City to be for future generations.

The New General Plan, as well as a timeline and documentation leading to its approval, is online at www.redwoodcity.org/generalplan .
