Shaping Up for Summertime!

Warmer and sunnier weather, longer daylight hours, blooming plants … yes, summer’s near approaching and it’s time to prepare for the season and get the mind and body in shape so we can be able to enjoy it fully. Many of us are so busy with work, kids or other life’s stresses that we forget to take time out each day for ourselves physically and mentally. If we want to perform our best each day, it’s of utmost importance that we take care of our health and fitness.

This all begins with a good, healthy and balanced breakfast to start everyday off. And no, this doesn’t mean just a coffee, cereal bar or bagel with cream cheese. Balanced means a good ratio of carbohydrates, proteins, and some monounsaturated fats. Healthy means food choices that are whole and natural instead of something that is processed and man-made. I also like to take fish oil pills as research have shown that not only is it good for the heart but for the brain also. A good tip is that whatever is good for the heart is also good for the brain. And if you have children, don’t forget to make sure they are eating breakfast also. Kids that eat breakfast have higher math and reading scores, better attention and behavior, and are overall healthier. There should be no excuses for skipping breakfast if you want to feel and perform optimally, there are plenty of great tasty and healthy food choices that takes a very short time to prepare.

With the longer and sunnier days of spring and summer upon us, it’s imperative that we do our best to incorporate some type of fitness activity everyday. If you are already on a dedicated and frequent training routine, that’s great and keep it up. Try mixing the activities up to keep your mind fresh and free from stagnancy, and also so that your body doesn’t plateau from the same program and training style. If you are more sedentary, start out slow and try taking a short brisk walk or bike ride in the morning, lunchtime or after work when the sun’s still out. Your mood will be better and you’ll get a nice dose of Vitamin D for stronger bones, immunity and heart health. Sunlight exposure time of about 15-30 minutes a few times a week is all you need to reap its benefits. And what’s best, it’s free —  just step outside.

As you can see, it’s not hard to get your mind and body ready for summer. Most of what I’ve mentioned you probably know already, but it’s applying that knowledge. Knowledge is power only when applied!
