Belmont Redwood Shores School District Board Vacancy

This message for Redwood Shores Community Members comes from the Belmont Redwood Shores School District (BRSSD):

At its most recent meeting, the Board of Trustees decided to fill the upcoming board vacancy with a provisional appointment. By statute, the Board has until April 15, 2017, to make this appointment, and we are now seeking applicants for this position. We encourage you to consider applying! Applicants must be registered voters residing in the District’s attendance area, and may not be an employee of the District.

The Board will have a vacancy due to Trustee Charles Velschow’s resignation effective March 22, 2017. The newly appointed Trustee will serve for the remainder of his term, through November 2018.

Application information can be found here. The application deadline is March 23, 2017, at 12pm. Interviews will be held on the evening of April 3, 2017.

A Message from the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District About Sandpiper Elementary School Expansion Plans

Dear Redwood Shores Community,

The Belmont-Redwood Shores School District is planning to expand Sandpiper Elementary School to provide 6th, 7th, and 8th grades and a total of 220 additional students in grades K-8. This project is intended to offer the families in Redwood Shores a local public school option for grades 6-8 and to help reduce the overall traffic into and out of the Shores. In compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act, the City of Redwood City has commissioned an environmental study, known as an Initial Study and Mitigated Negative Declaration. The document outlines what the impacts might be and how the District proposes to mitigate the potential impacts to a less than significant level. An analysis of potential traffic impacts is included. The study was published on November 4, and public comments will be accepted until December 6, 2016.

“HARAMBEE” Interactive Art Project in Redwood Shores

Something unusual is coming to Redwood Shores, and you have an opportunity to be a part of it!

Three Redwood City parks (including our own Mariner Park) will host artist Michael Koliner as he works with community members to build “Cob-Adobe Benches” — functional pieces of art that are visually distinctive and also convenient for park-goers.

Everybody in the community is invited to participate in a “Harambee” (which means “all pull together” in Swahili) event. Food, refreshments, and music are included. What you will need to bring to participate is your grubbiest clothes, because in order to build these pieces, as many people as possible will need to join a mud dance (stomping in mud) in order to ready the cob-adobe needed to finish these functional art pieces. Children and adults of all ages are encouraged to volunteer and be a part of the art installation!

The City of Redwood City announced on September 8th, 2015, the launch of a unique public art partnership with Fung Collaboratives to debut three works of functional art in October sponsored by Redwood City Parks and Arts Foundation. The City of Redwood City commissioned emerging artist Michael Koliner to produce and debut functional works of art for the community to sit on, use and enjoy at three local parks. The partners are currently planning opportunities for the community to participate and engage in the artistic process, which will be announced by mid-September.

“The City of Redwood City is thrilled to be partnering with Fung Collaboratives, the Parks and Arts Foundation, and Michael Koliner to bring new functional public art for the community to use and enjoy,” said Aaron Aknin, interim city manager. “Based on our recent city satisfaction survey, over 87.8% of our residents use local parks, and the public art debuting in October will provide a new, creative park benefit within three local parks for residents to enjoy and experience.”

Koliner will be based in the Bay Area while creating Redwood City’s three new public art pieces. The unveiling of the functional art collection in late October for the community to use and enjoy.

“We spend a lot of time in Redwood City, taking advantage of all the public programs the city produces. The community is extremely dynamic and a wonderful environment to create this art collection,” said Lance Fung, Fung Collaboratives chief curator. “Commissioning Michael Koliner is truly amazing and his artist energy and creativity will shine through in the art collection he is developing.”

“A big thank you to Fung Collaboratives and the City of Redwood City for their leadership and innovation to help steward this process through,” said Pamela Estes, Parks and Arts Foundation board president. “The art collection will be a tremendous community asset and enjoyed by all parks goers for years to come.”

Silicon Valley Clean Water Project Construction in June

A project to rehabilitate the existing biosolids drying beds at Silicon Valley Clean Water’s treatment plant at 1400 Radio Road is nearing completion and will require cement trucks traversing Redwood Shores Parkway for three days in June, all concentrated between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. for their roundtrips. The current schedule, which may change as construction conditions change, is:

  • 6/11 – Thirty-five (35) trucks
  • 6/17 – Fifty-five (55) trucks
  • 6/22 – Fifty-five (55) trucks

The project has significant environmental benefits by lining the beds and by making the drying process much more efficient. The work includes lime stabilization of the existing soil base, a new concrete floor and access ramps, internal roadway improvements, and a new decant system and pump station. The overall drying bed area is not increasing.

In the long term, the improvements will reduce the number of trucks leaving the SVCW site annually from about 600 to about 300 and significantly reduce biosolids disposal costs.

Redwood City Accepting Applications for Seven Open Positions on Its Boards, Commissions and Committees

The City of Redwood City is currently seeking applications for upcoming available seats on the Planning Commission, Board of Building Review and Complete Streets Committee (pilot program). Deadline to submit applications is Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at 5pm. Interested applicants can go online to access an application.

Redwood Shores 2015 Annual Meeting

Our guests will include San Mateo County District 4 Supervisor Warren Slocum, plus Redwood City Mayor (and Shores resident) Jeff Gee and Vice-Mayor (and former Shores resident) Rosanne Foust with a preview of the State of the City.

There will also be information on two big issues facing the Shores:

First is the continuing problems caused by roots of the older trees along the Shores parkways. The City will have an update on the progress of this work and other projects that may impact the Shores.

The Silicon Valley Clean Water Authority (SVCW) is the waste-water treatment plant on the Bay at the end of the Shores. (SVCW is also the source of the recycled water that is being used for landscaping in the Shores.) There is an old waste-water pipe running under the Shores that needs to be replaced, and SVCW will be providing a status report of options currently under review for this major project.

As always, we try to end our Annual Meeting presentation around 8:00 PM so that you can have time to ask questions or talk with our guests about issues of particular interest to you.

RSCA provided initial and matching funds for the purchase of the grand piano that now graces RWS Library’s Community Room, and we are proud of this addition to our community library. We are pleased to take this opportunity to showcase the talents of just a few of the gifted young people who are able to take lessons on this wonderful instrument.

RSCA – collaborating with Goodwill Industries – will accept for recycling old computers (hard drives are 3X erased & shredded for security), monitors, routers, and other consumer electronics including TVs, stereos, telephones, cell phones/PDAs etc.

Movie Production in Redwood Shores

We want you to be aware of the filming of a major motion picture on the Oracle Campus (*see footnote below) that will start this week. (This is a change from the information in the July PILOT magazine, so please forward this to your neighbors.)

You may have noticed a helicopter taking aerial photos of the Oracle campus on Sunday, July 27.  It was photographing in afternoon light, magic hour and into darkness.

All other filming will be interior, with some lighting on the exterior of the Oracle buildings after dark. The interior filming is now scheduled for Thursday, July 31, through Saturday, August 2.

July 31:  Filming will be from 2:00pm to 2:00am
August 1 – 2: Filming will be from 5:00pm to 6:00am

The producer of the film has stated that, “We appreciate the cooperation of the neighbors; we understand that we are ‘temporary guests’ and our crew will be respectful while working in the area and obey all traffic regulations.”
