The City thanks residents and motorists for their patience as it works to improve Redwood City’s roadways, and apologizes in advance for any inconvenience.

As part of its roadway preventative maintenance program, Redwood City is about to start road resurfacing projects on a number of neighborhood streets. This will provide smoother, safer, improved roadways – but will cause some inconvenience to residents and motorists in these areas during the work.

The work is scheduled to begin Wednesday, September 1st, and will be completed in approximately eight-to-ten weeks.

Below is a list of streets scheduled for this work, beginning with Redwood Shores locations.

Shoreway Road from Redwood Shores Parkway to the City Limits at U.S. 101

Redwood Shores Parkway from Shoreway Road to the City Limits at U.S. 101

Alameda de las Pulgas from Woodside to Massachusetts

Fernside Street from Alameda to Massachusetts

Fernside Street from Carson to McGarvey

Goodwin Avenue from Fernside to Alameda

Roosevelt Avenue from Hudson to El Camino

Hopkins Avenue from the City Limits west of Alameda to El Camino

Circle Road from Whipple to Hopkins

Edgewood Road from the City Limits west of Alameda to El Camino

Canyon Road from Jefferson to the City Limits near Cordilleras

Massachusetts Avenue from Fernside to Woodside

Crompton Road from Alameda to Dover

Vera Avenue from Crompton to Alameda

Dover Road from Jefferson to Alameda

Devon Way from Jefferson to Oak Ridge

Oak Ridge from Jefferson to Dover

Lancaster from Jefferson to Dover

Neighbors are being notified of scheduling and details of the work, and appropriate “No Parking” signage is being installed. The short-term inconvenience consists of a requirement to keep cars off the street during certain portions of the work, and to park cars off the street for approximately two days after the work.

The City will take all reasonable measures to minimize the impact of construction activity in neighborhoods, though some inconvenience is unavoidable. Motorists should expect periodic lane closures, detours, some dust, and temporary parking restrictions during construction. All roadway users are asked to be particularly cautious during construction.

Overall work hours will be 7:30 am until 4 pm. During the main part of the work, streets will normally be reopened to traffic by 5 pm. However, streets may be closed later if necessary to allow the new surfacing to fully “cure.”

In general, the process for this resurfacing project will involve two phases, Prep Work and Slurry Seal/Overlay:

Prep Work – repair failed areas and low spots, seal large cracks with filler material, and remove weeds;

Slurry Seal – on local, low volume streets and some major streets in good condition, loose material will be swept up, and a final coating of a thin sand and oil mixture will be applied to “seal” the street. Smaller streets may be closed entirely for up to four hours after the seal is applied. Until that seal is dry, neighbors are cautioned to keep cars, children, and pets from coming into contact with the roadway, as the seal material is very difficult to remove from rugs, clothing, etc.

OR (on selected streets)

Overlay – on local streets in poor condition and major streets, loose material will be swept up, and a two inch layer of new asphalt will be placed on top of the existing surface. Until the asphalt has cooled, traffic controls will be in place to direct vehicles around the new asphalt. Drivers are asked to proceed carefully and look for signs to direct traffic.

The City thanks residents and motorists for their patience as it works to improve Redwood City’s roadways, and apologizes in advance for any inconvenience.

Redwood City garbage collection service provided by Allied Waste has been temporarily disrupted due to a 48-hour work stoppage by Teamsters, Local 350.

Redwood City garbage collection service provided by Allied Waste has been temporarily disrupted due to a 48-hour work stoppage by Teamsters, Local 350. The work stoppage is a result of on-going contract discussions between the union and Allied/Republic Services at the Ox Mountain Landfill in Half Moon Bay.

While the issues there are not directly related to garbage/recycling collection here, Allied Waste’s staff at the San Carlos transfer station are engaging in a “sympathy” work stoppage. Therefore, curb-side collection services in Redwood City and other cities served by Allied are delayed.

Due to this work stoppage, Allied has informed the City that the pickup days this week have been rescheduled:

Customers who are scheduled for a Wednesday pickup will instead be serviced on Friday.

Customers who are scheduled for a Thursday pickup will instead be serviced on Saturday.

Customers who are scheduled for a Friday pickup will instead be serviced on Sunday.

Redwood City apologizes for any inconvenience that this may cause. It’s our understanding that regular service is expected to resume next week.

Any questions about garbage/recycling service may be directed to Allied Waste of San Mateo County at 650-592-2411.

After over thirteen hours of presentations, public comment, council conversations, and hours of studying the proposed budget, the Council approved its 2010-11 budget.

After over thirteen hours of presentations, public comment, council conversations, and hours of studying the proposed budget, the Council approved our 2010-11 budget. While we were fiscally responsible by approving a balanced budget without the use of reserves, I do not believe that anyone is happy with what we had to do.

Here are the highlights of the 2010-11 Budget:

General Fund Budget: $75 million

Balanced budget without the use of Reserves

Overall 8% reduction

Department reductions ranged from 1% to 13%

No layoffs of sworn police officers

No layoffs of firefighters

No pay cuts, reduction in benefits or furloughs

Elimination of over 40 staff positions

Layoffs of 15 - 20 staff

We also increased parking meter rates downtown, will be charging for annual fire department inspections of commercial properties and apartment buildings, and will be developing a new tree preservation ordinance with associated fees for tree removals.

Even though were able to approve a balanced budget, the hard work ahead will be implementing the changes that we made. What is even worse is that we are already looking at annual multi-million deficits for the foreseeable future.

The BIG questions that what we need to answer regarding our Quality of Life in Redwood City are:

What are the services that we need Redwood City to provide?

What are we willing to pay for these services?

If we are able to answer these two questions as a community, we might be able to establish a more sound financial foundation for our City. I look forward to hearing from you regarding your thoughts and answers.

The Redwood Shores Community Association will be turning 40 this year. We are in the process of putting a celebration together that everybody in the Shores community is invited to.

The committee is in the process of putting together the history of how this great community came to be. We will have on display information about the Shores from its start in the early ’60s. There will be photos showing how the area was developed showing some of the fond memories of the past like when Marine World was a part of our community and a great neighbor.

Those of us that can remember sitting in our back yards listening to the dolphins and whales to who remembers when there was only one road in and out of the Shores. Or better yet there was a time when we did not have a grocery store — anyone remember Byrnes Market?

The Shores is built out and now the RSCA works to keep it a great community. We’re proud how our community has developed, and we want to celebrate 40 years of progress and accomplishments.

Please mark your calendar for October 17 at the new Redwood Shores School. More details will be coming in the Pilot and our website ( www.rsca.org ). Please plan on attending bring your family.

If you have any memorabilia you might want to share please contact us at RSCA40@yahoo.com . We are also looking for groups who might want to participate with the activities during the celebration — contact us for more information.

Redwood Shores' second school is just about open for classes!

On Tuesday, April 20, 2010, the Measure C Bond Oversight Committee held its regular quarterly meeting to review expenditures of the bond fund for the period ending March 31, 2010. Approximately $24 million (out of the revised budget of $25.5 million) has been expended or accrued to date. As previously reported in December, 2009, there is a funding deficit (projected to be $182K) which is a planned overrun related to the school board’s decision last October to construct two additional day care rooms for a not-to-exceed amount of $798K (using $615K of unallocated bond funds plus monies from the district’s Capital Facilities Fund 25). No issues were identified and the expenditures were accepted as presented.

The Bond Oversight Committee also met on Tuesday, May 18th, to prepare its Annual Report to the Board (as required by CA law) and delivered it on Thursday, June 3rd. The Committee found that, to the best of its knowledge, the District is in compliance with the requirements of the CA Constitution. In particular, bond revenue has been expended only for the purposes so described in Measure C (for construction of the new school). The full report is available on the District’s website ( http://brssd.org/oversightcommittees.html ).

Construction on the new school has been completed. Having passed all required inspections, the District officially “took possession”! However, the floor of the multi-purpose room will be replaced (at SKW Architects’ expense) as the wrong color was installed. Bullene Landscapes was selected as landscaper with a one-year contract. New sod has been laid with heavy watering until the lawns are well established. Furniture and technology equipment will be delivered in mid-July to early August!

So far, 250 K-4 students have been registered. The staffing list has been completed but is pending the Board’s decision about class size. The Redwood Shores Elementary School PTA met for the first time on May 5th with 80-100 charter members!

SAVE THE DATE: The Grand Opening will be on Sunday, August 15, 2010, from 11 am to 2 pm!

On behalf of the Scouts, Leaders and the Committee of Troop 27, San Mateo, CA, Boy Scouts of America, it is our honor to announce that Christopher M. Gee has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, and will be recognized in an Eagle Court of Honor Ceremony on Saturday, August 21, 2010.

The rank of Eagle Scout is Scouting’s highest honor. To achieve this rank, Christopher earned 21 merit badges. In addition, he had to complete an Eagle project involving the planning, organization and execution of a community service project. Christopher’s Eagle project involved assembling “emergency” backpacks for each classroom at the new Redwood Shores Elementary School in Redwood Shores. Each backpack contained an emergency vest, band-aids, sanitizers, a flashlight with batteries, and other emergency supplies.

Supplies and materials were generously donated by Sequoia Hospital, South County Fire Station #12 (Belmont), and Swinerton Management & Consulting. Financial contributions were received from many friends and neighbors.

Christopher has been involved in Scouting since he was a Tiger Cub at Sandpiper. He is a long-time resident of Redwood Shores and was a member of the first full (K-5) graduating class at Sandpiper Elementary School. He graduated from Ralston Middle School, and recently graduated from Juniperra Serra High School in San Mateo. He will be attending California State University East Bay in the Fall, majoring in biology.
